AAC devices for more effective communication

Could communication be more critical?  It underpins social interaction, learning, even efforts toward independence.  Unfortunately, though, disability and special circumstances can create serious communication challenges.

When that happens, augmentative and alternative communication [AAC] devices can help address the challenges.  They support the communications efforts of young and old - everyone from school-aged children to adults with acquired disabilities. 

Used in homes, schools, and health-care facilities, ACC systems seek to give voice to those struggling to communicate due to:

• sensory impairments,

• movement disorders,

• language and cognitive disabilities, or

• situation-specific communication vulnerabilities.

AAC devices help users express their thoughts, needs, questions and ideas using language.  That's huge.  But they also work on a number of different levels to:

• improve language comprehension

• enable participation in social activities

• minimize stress and frustration

• facilitate behavioral problem solving

Because people and situations vary, there is no single best solution for communication difficulties.  A variety of devices are available, ranging from simple and inexpensive to very sophisticated (and expensive).
