The
Kessler Institute in East Orange, NJ is looking for brain injury
survivors to go through several Federal-grant-supported
cognitive retraining programs. These programs, which are
free to participants, involve three weekly one-on-one therapy
sessions at the Kessler Institute. Each session lasts two
hours.
Two programs are available, one
for "mild" brain injury, the other for "moderate
to severe" injury. Volunteers must:
-
Be between the ages of 18 and
58,
-
Have been injured within the
last five years,
-
Agree to attend the regular
weekly sessions at Kessler.
Survivors who were in coma more
than four hours should apply for the "moderate to
severe" program. All others should apply for the
"mild" program.
Dr.
Vera Anselmi at Kessler Institute East is in charge of these
cognitive retraining programs. For more information,
please phone her at 973-414-4700,
ext. 5553.
Letter
from a Graduate
We learned about the cognitive
retraining opportunities at Kessler from a program
graduate.
"...I
recommend the program so highly. When I started I had no
short-term memory, couldn't drive more
than 30 minutes at a time, suffered from anger, depression,
could remember nothing I read or saw.
Now
I have a short term memory that is becoming excellent, I've
gotten rid of the anger and depression, I can drive for a
couple of hours with the radio on [multi-tasking - my first
one]. I've even gotten my sense of humor back - because before
I could not make the connections to understand why something
was funny.
The
person to contact and woman running the program is a genius.
She too has a TBI from early childhood...
I've
been through 2 sessions at NYU Medical Center's Rusk
Institute, Day Brain Injury Program prior to this program and
did not see the progress I've seen here. My whole family says
I am functioning so much better now and I am much happier.
My
experience was so good - I would move to NJ for the 11 weeks
of the program just for the chance to benefit from
it."
