Welcome
Welcome to our brain injury site. We are sorry you are here, because we know
first-hand how painful dealing with a brain injury is. We hope to help by
passing along ideas, techniques and products we have found useful.
Brain injury overwhelms. One moment your life is rocking along rather
predictably. Then the bottom falls out, tumbling you into fear and uncertainty.
Life becomes a blur of medical tests, procedures, appointments, paperwork,
waiting. But you survive. And begin, slowly, to rebuild.
We have been there. My wife, Sandra, was
brain-injured when the car she was driving was T-boned in a multi-car accident.
Someone ran a red light. That was in 1996 and we have been
"recovering" ever since. So we understand at least something about
what you are going through at this moment. If I may be bold with advice for
those just beginning this journey...
To the caregiver
Your loved one did not choose to become brain-injured. He or she does not
want to become a different person, does not want the rage and emotions which so
overwhelm. Does not want seizures or physical limitations. In fact, likely
neither wishes nor accepts ANY of the many changes caused by brain injury. Be
generous with your patience, love, and understanding.
To the survivor
You are not alone in your confusion and suffering. Those who care for you are
also struggling to cope with this devastating injury. Try to pull together with
them. And accept their help--along with the help of a competent neurologist and
other rehabilitation specialists and programs--in shaping a new life.
And to all
whose lives are touched by brain injury. This site is dedicated to you. Visit
our BI Shop to discover products that can make your life easier and less
frustrating. Browse the Focus area to learn more about a particular brain-injury
issue. Commune a while in our Fellowship Hall.
Once again, welcome to B Independent.
We hope you will use us as yet another resource in your journey to recovery and
renewed independence.
A Fellow Traveler,
Mike Linley
